Just a 10 day juice cleanse! Just 5 more pounds! $50 off to a new you! This is your year! You can do it! As much as I love the idea of everyone leading a healthy lifestyle, we are surrounded by quick-fix numbers obsessed marketing strategies that promise a “new you.” Well screw you marketing, I don’t want to be a new me. I want to be the same me, who focuses on the positives of who I already am and how I can progress as a human being. I want to be a me who focuses on improving my self-confidence and my strength (mental & physical). A me who focuses on having a healthy relationship with myself so I can establish them with others. I want to focus on what I can do and not what I cannot or should not.
There is this juice ad on a billboard by my house that has a picture of a flabby belly with 2 hands pinching it next to a glass of green juice with the tag “This?……or this?, with the former pointing to the gut and the latter to the juice! Do they have some magical cure-all potion they are keeping secret that makes us healthy both in mind and body?! And if so, why are they hiding it from us? Oh, because achieving happy mind and body isn’t a destination that we can magically transport ourselves to a la “Beam me up Scotty” by downing some liquified carrots & kale and dropping 5 pounds. It’s going to take more than 10 days, 6 months or a year. There are going to be ups (yay!) and downs (yikes!), but this is how we learn; by reflecting on our decisions and being honest with oursevles about the outcomes. If you feel the need to hit the reset button after the holidays I do not begrudge you. Do what you gotta do!
For me, the bikini motivation has never worked and I have far too often let that be my driving force, and have “fallen off” the health train. But as I began to focus on improving energy levels and my happy hormones started sky-rocketing and I could more easily go snowboarding, swimming, hiking, biking, climbing, dancing, pole-fitness, running, slack-lining, activities that were extremely fun to me, my motivating force became more enticing, and working out became fun and part of my every day life. Don’t you remember that first time you ran a mile, or learned how to figure 8 in your belly dance class, or did your first inversion on the pole, or graduated from the bunny hill? Nothing beats that rush of knowing YOU are able to push yourself in a way that makes you feel strong, confident, happy and sexy. And let’s be honest here. Toning, losing weight, and looking great is definitely an added bonus.
So here’s to finding out what fuels you to begin or to continue your healthy sustainable lifestyle. So Zumba, CrossFit, pole, bike, swim or run your little hearts out. Fitness trends will come and go, but a healthy mind and body will always be yours. And if you need some added motivation, maybe you could get one of these workout buddies.
Disclaimer: I do not discourage people drinking juice. It is pretty fantastic, as you can see in this recipe.
This smoothie was inspired by a juice I had in Kauai over the holiday break. I don’t own a juicer anymore (took up way too much room for the little use it got), so I turned this into a smoothie instead.
Pineapple turmeric smoothie
1 c. pineapple, chopped
1/2 c. coconut water (or filtered water)
1 tsp. grated (or ground) turmeric
1 tsp. grated ginger
dash of black pepper*
1 medium carrot
juice of 1/2 lemon
dash of cinnamon
2-3 ice cubes
Put all ingredients into a blender and mix on high until it’s a smoothie. Pour and enjoy.
*The property peperine in black pepper is said to better help with absorption of the property curcumin found in turmeric that is said to help minimize inflammation. You can also read more about that interaction here.
Happy drinking, happy eating and happy exercising!
