WAIT! Don’t put away your beets and red fruits just because Valentine’s Day is over. It’s National Women’s History Month and I think women could use a little celebrating, don’t you? We have made some pretty awesome strides in the U.S. over the years. We are inventers, teachers, mothers, dancers, doctors, activists, friends, politicians, lovers, daughters and sisters and wives. I know that you’re pretty bad ass, too. I bet you recently you just stood up for yourself at work, or to a friend who wasn’t making you feel so hot, or mastered your first bit of salsa choreography, whipped up a bad-ass healthy and delicious meal for your family or completed a half-marathon on Valentine’s Day. WHATEVER you do or did, recognize yourself for it. 

So now that we are taking care of our mental health let’s not forget about the physical part! Exercising and eating right isn’t just about looks. It’s about living, too. Am I right? We all want to live our lives to the fullest. No surprise here. But 1 in 3 women suffer from heart disease?!!?! It’s not just men suffering from heart problems and there are a number of contibuting factors, such as depression, stress, lack of physical activity, and you can read more about that here.

I love beets (as if you couldn’t tell by the name of this blog), and they have so many health benefits. According to this article, a study has shown that consumption of beets lower blood pressure, help with digestion and regularity (oh yeah!), reduces inflammation, boosts athletic performance among other benefits. WHOA that’s a mouthful. And this has cacao powder?! Bonus! So if you are going to “indulge,” cheat your brain, but not your body and whip up this heart healthy smoothie created just for you! (Or another lovely lady in your life).


Chocolate heartbeet smoothie

  • Servings: 1 big smoothie
  • Time: 7mins
  • Difficulty: easy

1 small beet, washed and peeled
1/2 c blueberries
2 large strawberries
1/2c frozen cherries
1 T cacao powder
1 T maca powder (optional)
1 scoop protein powder (optional)
1-2 dates
1 c. almond (or other non-dairy) milk
3-4 ice cubes.

Put all ingredients in blender and blend until smooth. Pour and drink!
