Why is it that I can drink an espresso, or a double espresso, and have little to no side effect of the caffeine, but when I drink a coffee or latte, I get the jitters? I thought espresso would be more of a jolt, but I find the opposite. What gives? I’m sure I could look to the Google gods for some sort of scientific explanation, but I’d rather troll dream travel places on Pinterest instead. Anyway, skipping breakfast in the morning is just not an option for me. Unless I want to have an extreme hangry attack during first period and chew a poor student out for something as trivial as sneezing. (Fun fact: I actually told a student to be quiet before after he sneezed because I had been so frustrated by their noise level. After I saw the look of “did she really just tell me to shhh for sneezing?” I nearly died from laughter). But I digress.
So as I was saying breakfast is a MUST for me. I vary what I have though lately I have been really diggin’ the smoothies and smoothie bowls or as I like to call them breakfast bombs. And again with the corny name and use of some espresso from the coffee shop, this one is full of chocolatey goodness, but with a lot less sugar than smoothies tend to have.
Mocka smoothie breakfast bowl
1/2 frozen banana
1 frozen fig (I find mine at Trader Joe’s) OR remaining frozen banana
1 tbsp. hemp seeds
1 tbsp. chia seeds
2 tbsp. rolled oats
1 scoop Natural Sunwarrior Blend protein powder (optional)
1 shot espresso
2 tbsp. cacao powder
3/4 c. almond milk (or other non-dairy milk or water)
2-3 ice cubes
Toppings: cacao nibs, walnuts, coconut, raw granola, chia seeds, hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds, oats
Blend all ingredients in blender on high until smooth. Pour into a bowl and top with your preferred toppings.
I was trying to decide what my favorite breakfast treat is and couldn’t pick between smoothies or waffles. What’s your preferred way to start the day?
