This might be the closest I’ll get to cooking up a pumpkin recipe this year. I dunno why, but I am just not feeling it. Maybe it’s the 100 degree weather as we near November or maybe it’s the ubiquity of pumpkin goods. Also, my sweet tooth has gone into hiding. (Probably due to the 100 degree weather). But besides pumpkin there are so many other flavors that get swept aside like the different squashes, apples, pears, pomegranates, & persimmons. I get ridiculously excited about seasonal foods.Read More →

I’ve decided that eggplant is going to be the “it” veggie for 2018. At least in this household. As a vegetarian it has been on regular rotation in my household for a long time. I tend to have it simply grilled or roasted in the oven, yet it never disappoints and I can just about eat my weight in it. I love how it just takes on any flavor you give it, but alone But as I was doing a ton of meal prep, I decided to try something new to make it a little more tender and give it a new flavor. The reactionRead More →

Every time I head to the market or to the store it seems like there is a new type of squash to be had. Have you guys hard of honeynut squash? It’s this tiny butternut squash that is a bit sweeter than butternut squash and of course, it’s tiny, so it’s super cute. Plus, I love the fact that these guys are like mini personal squash. But getting back to the featured guest, I hear often that squash can be a little bit intimidating. They do have that tough outer shell that may seem tough to crack, but once given a little tender love andRead More →

Sunchoke apple salad

The sunchoke aka Jerusalem artichoke has been something that I’ve been eyeing for years at farmers’ markets. First in the Philly Reading Terminal and again in the markets out in LA. I’ve only had it once, while visiting family in northern Sweden. It was prepared in a soup on a cold and rainy day. And it was delicious. But I had always been a bit intimated to cook it myself. Maybe it was the name or the fact that it looked like ginger or sometimes one of those Mandrakes from Harry Potter. Artichokes tend to be a bit intimidating themselves. But a sunchoke (a termRead More →

It’s funny how our taste buds change so much as we grow. Growing up my parents had a rhubarb patch that I loved to pretend housed mini families under its canopy. But whenever the subject of eating rhubarb came up I ran in the other direction, but not before I gave my mom an “ewh I am not eating that” face. (Sorry, mom!) I’m not even sure I had even tried it, I think I didn’t like the name. As I started becoming interested in eating locally & exploring farmers’ markets, rhubarb was one of the things that I experimented with. And I loved it.Read More →

Ya know what I’ve been loving lately? People that can hug. You know what I mean, the kind that makes you melt a little and you feel like you’re being squeezed from all sides. I love getting those kinds of hugs from peeps and someone the other day called me a good hugger and I was like “who? me?” Nailed it! I mean, who wants a hug from a giant floppy noodle?Read More →

Do you remember when you started perusing the blogosphere? I became super interested in cooking in my early 20’s and started researching healthy recipes and found The Buff Chickpea, which doesn’t exist anymore. But it was my first window into the health blog world and for that little blog with maybe 15-20 recipes I am so grateful. It opened my eyes to an alternative way of eating and to a whole new hobby, cooking healthy and eventually blogging about it.Read More →

You guyses. Summer is soooo close, and while normally that means a break from teaching, for me this summer is looking a little different. After 11 years of teaching, I have decided to take a leap into the world of Wellness, Nutrition and Cooking. While I have no certain long-term plans, but many ideas of 1,231 businesses I could start, going back to school and traveling for many months, I am extremely enlivened and freaked out all at the same time. So many opportunities…but so much uncertainty.Read More →

I don’t know about you, but it seems that the case of the winter break blues hit hard this January. Maybe it’s the cold & rainy weather or the fact that the holidays fell on a Friday, giving everyone long weekends and others, like yours truly, a full 2 1/2 weeks off. But enough complaining. I’m bringing you some positive vibes this week with a bright and sunny winter salad that will keep you on your New Year’s Resolution track and make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Plus, I’m here to offer up some tips on staying healthy in the workplace, which IRead More →

Growing up, we never had mashed potatoes. Like, never ever. My mom was opposed saying she had them every day as a kid and couldn’t stand them anymore. I know, I know, I was so deprived, but I honestly could take ’em or leave ’em when they show up at a holiday gathering. Weird and un-American, huh? But when I saw this super duper ugly hairy looking root at the market, I had to give it a go. Never judge a book by its cover, right?Read More →

Tis’ the season to stuff our faces, lovelies. I find myself wanting all things warm, bready, spicy, and comforting. For some reason, cinnamon rolls have been a continuous appearance in my food dreams. Don’t act like you don’t have those. I guess it is sorta obvious, since cinnamon buns are the ultimate Sunday morning comfort food. Warm bread with cinnamon and sugar. Drewwwwwwwwwl.Read More →

Move over, tater tots. Your fried & oily ways are needed no more. We have moved on to bigger, healthier & more colorful spuds. Of the sweet potato variety to be exact. We loved your crunch texture on the outside and soft inner self, but that is why these crispy smashed spuds will be taking your place. They are crispy, crunchy & golden brown & are open to being topped off with healthy toppings. Plus there is no peeling necessary. BONUS!  And to put it bluntly, they are just more delicious.Read More →

“These are the best damn peaches I have ever eaten!” -Me, at a farmers market, every time I eat freshly picked peaches. Or strawberries. Or carrots. Or potatoes. Pretty much insert any produce in place of “peaches” and it’s true.  If you’ve had freshly picked fruit or veggies from your garden or local market, you know that they are the most flavorful fruits & veggies you have ever eaten. One time, I bought a box of freshly picked snap peas and they tasted like no other snap peas I had ever eaten before. And the box was gone in hours. Snap peas! Who knew? We allRead More →

Tropical fruits are consuming me! I cannot stop eating them. Has that been happening to you guys lately with the sun heating us up and keeping us up later? For me the summer time is all about sweet and tangy refreshing fruit cocktails, salsas, and salads. And I loooove juxtaposing flavors so the sweetness of the pineapple with the spice of the jalapeño and cooling cilantro are totes floatin’ my boat right now. Read More →

You guys. I have a confession. I am addicted to my farmers market. Or any farmers market, really. And to trying new foods that I have never heard of before, let alone seen. When I saw this really weird looking new to me veggie I knew that it was coming home with me. Poor little ugly duckling. Everyone needs a home. And this puppy (get it?) found one with a brother; truffle oil.Read More →
